D is for Dart

noun.

A dart is a wedge taken out to shape a garment to fit the contours of the body.

Because of the curves on women's bodies, darts help to fit the fabric closer into the body. The most common forms are bust darts and waist darts which are usually triangular or diamond shaped, darts can be curved but this is more unusual.
